Using PersonalBrain 5.0.4.0 with J-1.6.0_16:

If I drag a file which reside in a thought folder (which has many files in it) into another thought to create a direct link to it, the path is not set right! It uses C:\Program Files\PersonalBrain instead of the actual path the open brain resides in.

btw., please make it set the path relative to the brain root. So if I move the brain, the links to the files in the thought folders would still work!

In 5.5 beta linking to internal files is not allowed.

!@#$ (swearing), well I need to at least express my emotions without breaking protocol. Good enough?

thnx for the heads up....

PB, your killing me.... please make it work!!

p.s. I had it already mentioned it on Uservoice a second time as a feature request. If anyone sees the merit (freedom) please vote: http://thebrain.uservoice.com/pages/4597-personalbrain/suggestions/311967-feature-request-adding-links-pointing-to-files-in-thought-folders<br>

An update on my comments on Uservoice :

Feature request: adding links pointing to files in thought folders

Well, I don't think removing is the same thing as fixing in this case, because I actually want this feature very badly! Can you guys provide it? I need this freedom to have lists of files in one thought, BUT being able to comment on the individual files by linking individual thoughts to the individual files in question.

btw., please make it set the path relative to the brain root. So if I move the brain, the links to the files in the thought folders would still work!

Being forced to add ONE attachment per THOUGHT to be able comment specificially on it is just STUPID! The only reason this restriction would be enforced is because it has implications which doesn't get the needed resources/priority to be dealt with!

Btw. the idea is to mainly use PersonalBrain to organize ALL of my files instead of Windows Explorer/Directory Opus. And this feature is an absolute MUST for the migration to have the added value it has the potential for!

b4,

Thank you for the request.  I'll add this to our engineers Feature Request List.

In the mean time, you can always hold down the CTRL key when dragging into PB to create a COPY of the file, rather than a link.

Thank you,
Matt

Your suggested "workaround" indicates that you missed my point! What's the point of a duplicate? The main idea of a smart content management is to keep things central and connected. Are you sure that I've explained my problem clearly? And thnx so far as I do appreciate it being set on the to do. I really hope it comes out soon.

YES! at least I can move on with the migration, as I've found a good enough workaround for now. Although it will break if I move the brain. And it requires an additional step of opening the second thought folder instead of just one and dragging to the other thought. But it's not that bad for a workaround even after 1000's.

The workaround is to create Windows shortcuts outside PB after opening the individual thought folders. I won't move my brain soon, so for those links that will break I can relink after the feature is provided.

I want to add an addition to my request. Maybe you can add a fixer or automatic converter to the feature? That if it detects a Windows shortcut in a thought folder pointing to a file in another thought folder, that it then converts it to the PB file link.

And that I can drag an attachment from a thought to another to create the link directly without having to open the folder first to add the file.

Btw. using an Accelerator to open the thought folders is really advised for this workaround, which is why I'm glad it's possible thnx to PB team! Really a nice one....

Making copies as a work around is not good for me.   When I update a document, I have to update all the copies which is painful and error prone. This will also leads to "brain" bloat. Please allow/fix internal links with relative paths.

Thanks.

MikeA, did you consider my workaround which I've mentioned above after commenting on the PB proposed workaround?
