Problems with German Umlauts
Hallo Matt,

in HTML-view the questionmarks are not shown as an ambersand-string but rather like this: [...]"Sldner und Drogenhndler</span> - kollektiv als Todesengel"[...]

If I look at the corresponding textfile in folder 'txt' I see the following: [...]"S<F6>ldner und Drogenh<E4>ndler - kollektiv als <BB>Todesengel<AB>"[...]
I thought editing all the textfiles in this folder (with utilities like sed or awk) might be a good idea. But when I open the mentioned textfile in vi-editor I see it in a form as it should be: [...]"Söldner und Drogenhändler- kollektiv als »Todesengel«"[...].

Could you give any help how I can solve this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Hans
Problems with German Umlauts
Hello,

I still have the problem that in hundreds of attached notes I see a questionmark instead of the correct German umlaut. I know that a faulty import in some older beta-version is the reason for this and that this bug is fixed.
As I have to go on working with the current version (4.5.2.1) I'd like to repeat the question of another user that he posted a year ago: will there be in the near future the possibility to search/replace brain-wide words/characters? Or is there another way to replace the questionmarks with the correct letter? Maybe by editing some files on OS-level?
Thanks for your reply.

Regards
Hans Peter
4204 - special characters / umlaut in notes
I have exactly the same problem after upgrading from 4125 to 4203: all umlauts have been replaced by a rectangle.

Hello Harlan,
I'm sure you'll hate me, but it still does not work (now with 4.1.2.5). but I found out some strange or surprinsing things:
I modified the word ('xuser', a MaxDB-command) and the note that the trouble is all about - and part of it worked:

what I tried in the note containing the word 'xuser':
inserting the word 'xuser' at the end of any line of the note - not found
xuser at beginning of line - not found with 'xuser' or 'xuser*' BUT FOUND WITH 'XUSER' (although there is definitely no textstring 'xuser' in capital-letters in the note!!)
inserted blank before and after the word - not found
appending 'abc' to 'xuser' - found with 'xuserabc', NOT with 'xuser*'
deleting 'abc' again - NO LONGER FOUND (neither with 'xuser' nor with 'xuser*')
inserting 'yz' after first letter in 'xuser' (xyzuser) at beginning of line - found with 'xyzuser' but NOT with 'xyzuse*'
deleting 'xy' at beginning of word (no it's 'zuser') - NOT found with 'zuser'
inserting a 'z' almost at the end of the word (no becoming 'zusezr') - FOUND with 'zusezr' or 'zusez*'!
copy original note (with word 'xuser') via clipboard to new thought - not found
copy original note (with word 'xuser') via clipboard to notepad, cleaning up and back to a new thought - not found
copying the thought with PB-function - not found
inserting a new thought with a new note containing the string 'hello xuser' - FOUND!

So we can see: the search-function works as it is intended to
(1) when you search for the textstring in capital-letters although it is NOT written in capital-letters in the note (this seems strange to me)
(2) or when you modify the word somehow at the beginning, the middle or the end.
(3) or when you create a new thought and insert the word manually into the note.

I could explain (1) and (2) to myself like this:
Is it possible somehow that a kind of faulty fuzzy search of the search-engine is to blame for this? when i search for 'xuser' the engine suggests the word 'user' to search for ('did you mean...'?) because 'user' appears more than a hundred times in my notes. when i modify the word it does not see the connection to the word 'user' anymore so it really yields the expected results. Is this behaviour not to be controlled by the parameters in the searchengine.xml-file (I set them all to 0.00)? maybe they are not considered?

Alex

P.S. And last: If I copy the content of this forum-box into a new note in PB again the note is not found by the advanced search (although I can see in the HTML-view of the note that there are no special characters confining this textstring'). By the way: The text of the original note that the problem is all about was also inserted into PB via clipboard.

Harlan,
yes, actually I am sure that I modified the right SearchEngine.xml (in the 'res'-folder of the current installation). As I do not have any other installation of PB on my computer there is only one file with that name.
I re-tested with all versions up to PB 4.1.2.3 - but the problem still exists.
It's somehow funny that I can search for ALL other words in the record (for example I can search for 'dbmcli machgk00 superdba admin user_put' and get as the result the right thought) but if I search for the word 'xuser' this record still cannot be found.
The HTML-code of the file is as follows:

<p>dbmcli -d d10 -u superdba,admin user_put superdba PASSWORD=admin<br />
xuser -U w -u superdba,admin -d D10 -n cherwsvr3d1 -S INTERNAL -t 0 -I 0 &#160;('-l' ist grosses i, nicht kleines L)<br />
dbmcli -d D10 -U w &#62; ok</p>

<p>&#160;</p>

<p>dbmcli -d d10 -u superdba, admin user_put control PASSWORD=machgk00</p>

<p>xuser&#160;-U w -u control,machgk00 -d D10 -n cherwsvr3d1 -S INTERNAL -t 0 -I 0 ('-l' ist grosses i, nicht kleines L)</p>

<p><br />
</p>

The SearchEngine.xml now looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<SearchEngine name="PersonalEngine">
  <!--
    Path settings
  -->
  <Property name="indexHome"              value="index"/>
  <!--
    Don't use WordNet for now, but we may want it later
  <Property name="wordNetConfigFile"      value="res/WordNet.xml"/>
  -->
  <Property name="spellingDictionary"     value="res/english.dic"/>
  <Property name="stopFile"               value="res/stopwords.txt"/>
  <Property name="synonymsFile"           value="res/synonyms.txt"/>
  <!--
    General settings
  -->
  <Property name="minimumScore"           value="0.00"/>
  <Property name="maxResultsSize"         value="100"/>
  <Property name="maxSummaryFragments"    value="3"/>
  <Property name="additionalBreakSymbols" value=".-_/\=+&amp;#^*?()~|[]{};:&lt;&gt;,"/>
  <Property name="fuzzyFactor"            value="1"/> <!-- Disabled -->
  <Property name="enablePhoneticsFilter" value="false"/>

  <!--
    Filter settings
  -->
  <Property name="enableStopFilter"     value="true"/>
  <Property name="enableStemmerFilter"  value="true"/>
  <Property name="enableSynonymsFilter" value="true"/>
  <Property name="enableWordNetFilter"  value="false"/>  <!-- change this line also to enable WordNet -->
  <!--
    Individual index settings go below here
  -->
  <Index name="PersonalThoughts">
    <Property name="minimumScore"           value="0.00"/>
    <Property name="defaultOperator"        value="AND"/>
  </Index>

  <Index name="PersonalContent">
    <Property name="maxFieldLength"         value="250000"/>
    <Property name="minimumScore"           value="0.00"/>
    <Property name="defaultOperator"        value="AND"/>
  </Index>
</SearchEngine>

I also re-created a thought with the same contents but always the same.

I wonder if you have any other idea. Is there really no other user with a similar problem?

Alex

Excel-file not completely indexed
Hello Harlan,

I am sorry to say that I already set the 3 minimumScore-parameters in the SearchEngine.xml-file to 0.00 a long time ago and restarted and reindexed PB several times since then. so there has to be another cause for this problem.

Alex
Excel-file not completely indexed
Harlan,

i deleted the excel-file and re-imported it, but the problem still exists.

the contents of the mentioned note is as follows:
<p>dbmcli -d d10 -u superdba,xxy user_put superdba PASSWORD=admin<br />
xuser -U w -u superdba,xxxxx -d D10 -n cherwsvr3d1 -S INTERNAL -t 0 -I 0<br />
dbmcli -d D10 -U w &#62; ok</p>

<p>dbmcli -d d10 -u superdba, xxz user_put control PASSWORD=machgk00<br />
<b>xuser</b> &#160;-U w -u control,xxxxxx -d D10 -n cherwsvr3d1 -S INTERNAL -t 0 -I 0<br />
dbmcli -d D10 -U c &#62; ok</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>

Although the word 'xuser' shows up twice the advanced search cannot find it.

Thanks.

Alex

Excel-file not completely indexed
Hi Harlan,

the search in the excel-file still does not work although I adapted the parameter 'maxFieldLength' in SearchEngine.xml to a higher value (to 250000).
What is even more problematic, however, is that searches of the contents of an internal thought's note are not successful (s. attached file).
When I search for 'xuser' (appears twice in a thought) PB does not find the corresponding thought.When I search for the word 'superdba' which also occurs twice in the same thought then the thought is found.

Do you have any solution for this?

Thanks in advance
Alex

hi Matt,
have you found so far anything that could explain why indexing this file doesn't work how it should?

thanks.

Hello Harlan,

I sent you the file.
Only words up to row 2028 can be found through advanced search.

thanks for your help.

yes, i've seen this thread and I've already adapted the minimumScore-values of the xml-file to the ones proposed in the thread.
thanks anyway for your help.
is there some other thing I could do?

Excel-file not completely indexed
Hi Hakan,
thanks for your reply.
I found the ascii-file with the contents of the excel-file in the folder you mentioned and in this file I do find the word that cannot be found through the advanced search. Even with the windows-explorer filesearch i do find this word - but unfortunately not in PB, not even after rebuilding the search index manually.
when i update the excel-file in the first row it's no problem: after saving the file PB immediately finds the newly inserted string. but when in update the last row: no chance, only windows filesearch is able to find the textstring.

do you have any solution for this?

thanks in advance

Excel-file not completely indexed
hello,
is there a limit regarding the file-size of an attachment? i attached an excel-file (Excel 2003) to a thought and found out that only the first 2.000 (roughly) rows are being indexed, the cell-contents below cannot be found through advanced search (F9). i converted it to Excel 2000 and back - but this doesn't change anything.
is this a bug?
There is some other thing striking: if I search for a word that's at the upper part of the file this word is found and I get the context of this word in the advanced search-box. For words in a lower part of the file I do not see this context (see attached document).

thanks for any reply.
alex
