Should I keep MindManager?
I use both, but for different purpose.

At the moment I'm working on a project with a partner (a training programme); I need to have the complete course outline, a list of questions and problems that have risen, a to-do list and the set of ordered tasks that we have to follow all in one place and easily visible.  For that I use MM (with the Gantt extension) : it is easy to move items around, to add resources and deadlines, and I have a lot of control on the layout.

But when it comes to juggle with ideas and references (like when I read an article and want to keep a trace of what it said), to tag them, to link them to others and to external resources, to multi-catalog them, then no questions PB is the solution.

In a nutshell the differences are that one is like a strong and branchy tree, the other like a dense rhizome, one is great for layout and clarity, the other for lateral thinking.

My advice is to have a really good understanding of your needs (never easy but indispensable), and if you keep MM then do use it actively for the needs that made you choose to keep it otherwise you will indeed have spent money for nothing.

Massive tagging
Hi all !

I would like to know if there is a way to tag a group of thoughts ?

I have a hierarchical set of thoughts (like the NACE code for example) that I would like to use as jump thoughts to identify other thoughts - labeling or tagging the other thoughts directly is not a good solution because I need the 'identifying thoughts' to carry information (in the Note section).

To make sure that I don't mistake an 'identifying thought' for a 'regular' jump thought, I would like to label/tag the former.

Has someone a solution ?

Thanks !

XML Import broke in 4.5.0.3?
The file I have built up (http://forums.thebrain.com/tool/post/thebrain/vpost?id=3099746) is indeed quite big so I could split it up into several smaller files, but what's the best solution ?  One file with Thoughts, one with Links, one with Attachement, etc. ? And if so are the GUID that I've created kept ?
Brain 4 hangs when trying to import large XML file
Hello !

I have built up an XML file (respecting Brain's xml schema) from a database I want to import; it includes thoughts, links and entries.  The file is some 170000 (that's right, six digits) lines long.

I created a blank brain to import all this in, but as soon as I have copied the lines from my notepad the Brain sort of freezes and I can't open the 'edit' menu.

How could I import this XML file without blocking everything ?

And a side question : how can I turn the file's content into UTF-8 ? I've got loads of thoughts and entries with accents in them (é, à, etc.) ?

Tweaking the web layout
Dear all,

I would like to modify my WebBrain layout in such a way that :

  • at the bottom lies the note section (-> no need to change anything here)
  • the plex takes half the width and stands at the right (-> that I managed to do)
  • on the left of the plex lies a "box" ( <div> ) whose content would depend on the active thought (->and there I'm lost)

For example selecting a Brain could be about a country, and if you click on the Tought "Capital" you would get in the box a picture of the town hall and in the note section the history of the city; or in the box the city location via goole map, etc.

Thank you for you help !

Hi again,

here's my output log, using the 4.5 version.

First PB opened the "Test" brain, then I tried to open my brain "Gnoséothèque", still unsuccessfully :

can't connect to DB - not output.log file found
Hello all !

First many thanks for this great software - an investment I do not regret.

Here's my problem :

I'm running the beta PB 4306 under Vista. So far so good, everything worked fine until one day when, while opening PB, I got this message : "couldn't create or connect to the database".

I checked the forums and tried the solutions suggested but to no avail : I don't have/find the output.log file, restored backup (with Vista) doesn't solve the problem, creating a new brain and merging it with the original one doesn't work.

It seems I still have all the info (notes, attachements) in the directories.

In one word : HELP !

Best regards,

Patrick.
