I have several thoughts in yellow, and it used to *pop*. Now it looks more muted, as if there's a haze over them.

Other thoughts my text color is set to white. White white. But now they look more grey than white. 1.jpg

Same here--- have a 4k monitor set to 225% rendering.  .38 text was blurry for me, too.

Makes me think I shoulda/coulda invented a font family called 'Cataract'.  :-)

@Ruud ~ I've always had this problem with the thought colors in TB10 --  and I think the color issue is more noticeable when the colors are assigned to the thought backgrounds instead of the thought font. For example, in the images below, you will see the background colors on thoughts were crisp and bright in TB8 -- and they are now muddy looking in TB10. See the pink and yellow backgrounds in the following images which were captured before updating to TB10.0.38.

TheBrain 8 = Bright Colors
TB8-BrightColors.png TheBrain 10 = Muddy ColorsTB10-MutedColors.png
When I asked Support about this, they explained the colors in TB10 are slightly transparent which means the wallpaper color now affects the display of the colors in our thoughts. I've since asked for user control over the transparency (opacity) of the thought colors in TB10, but I don't know if this request has been documented or not.

In addition, the undesirable change I noticed in the new desktop version of TB10.0.38 is that the font in my thought names now appears to be bolder and blurrier (less crisp) -- which I do not like at all. (This new font styling also no longer matches the font display in the web client.) You can see the new display change by comparing the font style below with that in the 2 screenshots above:

TheBrain 10.0.38 = Bold & Blurry Font (Desktop)
TB10-BoldBlurryFont.png
This bolder, blurrier font display change may also explain why the muted font colors are now more obvious.

In addition. I haven't found any way to adjust the display back to what it was previously, and I really don't want to have to switch to a different font, just to have a lighter weight and cleaner display.

In light of this, I would really like to be able to REVERSE whatever display changes were made in TB10.0.38. This new font display is just one more "improvement" that is (for me) both unattractive and undesirable.

There are possibly a few different discussions happening here.  First, Metta, yes - one of the differences between 8 and 10 is that the Thought Background Colors are no longer solid and are somewhat translucent.

There was a change in 10.0.38 that increased text rendering performance.  The change makes for a faster/more responsive plex in many areas of the application (navigation, thought creation, changes on selected thoughts, etc.)  Does the blur go away if you use the text slider? or if you restart the app?  I've only seen blurry text when changing my screen resolution while leaving the app open.  But an app restart resolves the cataracts... I mean blurry fonts.

Thanks,
Matt

We haven't been able to replicate yet, but we'll keep looking into this. If anyone would like to test, you can try 10.0.37 on the Beta channel compared to 10.0.38 on Alpha.  Please send/post screenshots of each.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt ~

As I see it, there are actually 3 related issues here:
(1) the opacity of the thought colors
(2) the less crisp (blurry) font format
(3) the new BOLD font density

(1) Translucent Colors
> Has a request been documented for user control over the thought and font color opacity?

(2) Blurry Font Format
Closing and reopening the app had not made any appreciable difference. Nor does using the text resizer -- and, even if it did help, resizing the thoughts would not be a viable solution in brains that are as dense as mine.

(3) Bold Font Display
> Is there any possibility of allowing users to choose the lighter weight (non-bold) font display we had previously?

  • The new dense bold display is much less attractive to my eye, and it is made worse by the fact that the edges of the font are now less crisp (more blurry).
  • In addition, this bold desktop display now no longer matches the font style in the web client.

No, restarts don't change how this looks. It reminds me of when Windows came out with ClearType and initially it would make things look less crisp. This looks seriously messed up; I have an excellent computer with an excellent screen but I can't get this to look right.  To use an understatement: this is really, really bad.

I just updated to 10.0.38. The text is too thick and a bit blurry.
I uninstalled it and I've installed 10.0.37. Much better.

Good news. We've been able to replicate the fuzzy text.  Seems to happen when scaling the screen display to something other than 100%.

Thanks for reporting this issue, we've documented it for further review.

Thanks, Matt. Appreciate the update.

Also, what about the thicker, bold font format?

This heavy bold display is (for me) even more problematic than the fuzzy edges.

Just now updated to 10.0.39 to get the blurry font fix -- and the edges of the font are a little bit less fuzzy.

However, the text is still formatted in Bold, which is very unattractive to my eye. Looks heavy and bloated. In fact, this bold display is so unpleasant that I will no longer want to use TB on a daily basis for my information management if this can't be changed.

Is there any chance this formatting problem is going to be fixed, as well -- or are we now stuck with this ugly, overweight Bold display?

@wanju ~ Please note that we are talking about the formatting of thought names in the plex, not the font in TB's notes.

As you can see, the heaviness (and residual fuzziness) of this new bold font weight becomes quite a visual distraction in dense collections of thoughts.
