Tables originally weren't a part of Markdown but the Github Flavored Markdown extension to the language is now the most common way to write Markdown tables.

Just as inTheBrain the pipe symbol is used to make table columns:

| table col | table col | table col |

To signal markdown processors this is a table you then use at least 3 hyphens under the headings

| table col | table col | table col |
| --- | --- | --- |
| content | content | content |

TheBrain doesn't do that. It skips adding the hyphens:

|heading|heading|heading|
|content|content|content|

The result is that those tables don't render nicely or not at all in other markdown editors.

Typora:

It does the best it can and interprets each row as a new table.

Microsoft Visual Studio Code:

No hyphens, no table:

md-non-comp-table.jpg
Here's that same table but now with the addition of the hyphens:

md-comp-table.jpg  ...and that's how virtually every MD parser that can do tables will look for a table.

So while not a ton of tables have been created yet as the editor is just out, could the editor be updated to create GFM compatible tables through the addition of the row of hyphened columns under the heading column?

The reason this matters for data freaks like TheBrain users is that it is nice to have documents you can access later on with any other tools.

I am using Markdown tables in another app currently and plan to move them over to TheBrain, but it will take a lot of time to change the tables over to TheBrain format. I would rather TheBrain change to universal Markdown Table support.

This is also usually the area where justification is decided:
| :--: |
equals centered,
| :-- |
is left and so on.

Thanks!

Good catch. See  http://fletcher.github.io/MultiMarkdown-5/tables.html for multimarkdown table formatting.

Thank you for sharing. I'll forward this on to the engineering team for further review.
