I'm a bit confused about the URLs associated with each thought in the Brain.

I know I can generate a URL from a given thought on my desktop computer. I can also go into the webbrain and copy the actual URL associated with an activated thought.  But these seem like entirely different URLs.

Is one only for internal hyperlinking within a Brain?  And the other is the "external" URL you would give to someone else to link into your webbrain?

I'd like to be able to get the "external" URL without going into webbrain and copying it there. What is the best process for that?

Thanks,

Mark

From the desktop version activate the thought and choose Online > Copy Web Thought URL.

This will generate a URL that can be used from any browser to open your WebBrain at that thought, as long as either the WebBrain is public or Unlisted, or it's Private and the user has the roles to log in.

If you right-click a thought and choose Copy Local Thought URL, it will generate a brain:// URL which can be used (in Windows) to open that thought when you click it from any application. However, it's local to your machine, and for it to work it must have TheBrain installed and also the database you copied the brain:// URL from.
If you use that URL in the thought notes I believe it will work using WebBrain (so clicking on the link in your WebBrain will still activate the thought).

Ahh, so it was hidden somewhere else.  Thanks!

Yes, this is precisely the difference and as zenrain mentioned, as long as your Brain is synced, you can navigate to any thought then go to the Online menu and choose Copy Web Thought URL.

Patrick, when I "Copy Web Thought URL" for this particular thought in a synced brain what pastes from my clipboard is:

https://webbrain.com/u/188o

Clicking on that link delivers an error message (see additional info in reply below)

The URL for the same thought copied from the webbrain is:

https://webbrain.com/brainpage/brain/C00CB79D-B952-3F63-E801-80048C72FBC2#-64366

Clicking on that link delivers me to that thought in the webbrain.

So am I missing something in terms of the Copy Web Thought URL?

Thanks,

Mark

Additional information:

1.  When I click on either of the links as pasted in above (or in an email), they DO take me to the right thought in the Webbrain.

2.  When I paste the first of the two links into Word, and then activate the link from there, I get the Problem Encountered message. But when I paste the second of the two links into Word, and then activate the link from there, it does take me to the right thought in the Webbrain.

I remember something like this before when I couldn't get certain Brain links to work right from Microsoft Office products.  Is there a limitation on where one can use the "Copy Web Thought URL" link?

Mark,

I just clicked on the above link, https://webbrain.com/u/188o, and it loads for me. What is the error you are receiving when clicking on it?

Mark,

I just saw your second reply, did some more testing and was able to replicate the issue. I'll write this up and share it with our engineers so they can investigate.
