Let's say that I have a two parent thoughts, Parent A and Parent B.  Parent A has no thoughts yet, but Parent B has Child 1 and Child 2.  When I select both Child 1 and Child 2, copy them, and then paste them under Parent A, one child becomes a child of both Parent A and Parent B, but the other child becomes only a duplicate under its original parent, B, and has no connection to Parent A.
