I think this is happening on ALL files that I try to move into my brain in the latest beta.

o Drag & Drop a file into the plex.
o Right click and "Move File into Brain"

Results in the link disappearing from the thought and nothing else, no obvious message or something like that.

In looking at the log I've seen numerous messages all revolving around something like this:
"~The file is not available for conversion: ..."
What does that mean?

Hmm, I'm not able to recreate this. Hopefully support will see this and take a look.

I've now recreated on both
1)Mac OS X 10.5.8 on PPC (which means java 1.5)
2) Mac OS X 10.6.1 on Intel java 1.6

Although I got  different error on 10.6.1 & java 1.6

More info from a follow up email discussion with support.  I want to post this here for completeness and tracking down the road.

When you say link do you mean the link which connects the Thought to its Parent Thought or are you referring to the attachment?

I'll answer this first because I see how this is ambiguous and could be misleading...

The "link" I was referring to in the post is the "attachment link" (for lack of a better phrase), i.e. the reference in the attachment section that points to the external file.

At no time do the links in between thoughts have any issues.

Also, is the Brain in which this happens located on a network drive?

Will answer this next, as this might be the most revealing...

The brain I was doing this on was not exactly a "network drive", but it is special from a regular brain in the regular file system.  On Macs you can create disk images, which are basically files in the local file system that look like mounted hard drives.

That was the first place I noticed it, so I just did some quick testing and apparently this fails in ANY case where the data trying to be moved into the brain is NOT co-located on the SAME volume.   Doesn't seem to matter on the volume type (i.e. I tried this on network volumes (CIFS & AFP), mounted disk images, & external HDD) all failed when the source data was not on the same volume as the destination brain.

It did work on the disk image volume when I first manually moved the data to a test directory on the same disk image volume, then did the drag and drop of the file into the brain, then did the move into brain.  That even worked when the disk image volume was further mounted over AFP to another computer and I did the same test from that computer (i.e. Computer 2 -> AFP Server -> Mounted Disk Image -> File & Brain)

So it would seem that what's broken is trying to move across volumes.  This does work in 5.0.x versions of PB.

Answers to the rest of the questions, but don't think you'll need them:

When you drag and drop a file into the Plex to create a Thought does the a Thought get created then the link which connects the newly created Thought to its Parent get deleted?

The link from parent to child gets created correctly and always stays in place.

Same goes for "Move file into Brain", if you select a Thought which contains an attachment then select "Move file into Brain", does the link which connects the Thought to its Parent dissappear?

No, it says.  Only the "file reference link" in the attachment section disappears.

Are you able to replicate this issue in a test Brain or is it the case that this only happens in one of your Brains?

Can replicate in a test brain AND my main brain.

Rich, Thanks for the post and the additional info. We will run some test to see if we can replicate and correct this. For the current time, please use the workaround you came up with so you don't run into this issue.

Thanks,
Moe
