Not sure if this is the right category, but I wanted to post this on TheBrain Forums as there seems to be a lot of academics on here.

I'm looking for a PDF app recommendation for Windows. I absolutely hate Adobe, so Acrobat Reader and Acrobat DC are out. They are resource hogs and the new pricing structures are horrendous (this is from someone who gets the entire Adobe Creative Cloud Suite free from work).

I've outgrown using the in-built PDF viewer in Brave because I do need to edit PDFs. I'm very much for paying for the software if it is well built, so pricing isn't an issue.

What is everyone using on here? Any ideas?

I've enjoyed at one time or another these products:

PDF Annotator | https://www.pdfannotator.com/en/
PDF X-Change | https://www.tracker-software.com/
PDF Forge | https://www.pdfforge.org/

I also severely dislike the Adobe PDF Reader. It's just so incredibly cluttered!
I don't have the need to edit PDFs myself.
If I work with PDFs in that way at all, then because they're the output of Overleaf (Online Latex editor).

Otherwise at ninite.com they list SumatraPDF which is a minimalistic PDF viewer. (so much nicer to work with than Adobe)
Since that is a good pick, I'd try CutePDF for PDF-editing since that's also listed there. [no experience with it myself though]

For getting digital text out of PDF scans, ABBY FineReader is what I always hear people rave about.
It also has editing tools.

Thank you @DavidGretzschel and @mdlynam !

I completely forgot about Abbyy FineReader, I think this is the direction I'll head in.

Thanks again!

@joshsullivan I'm using Xodo to edit and view PDF's. It's a free app. Download it from the Microsoft Store. There's also a browser extension for Chromium based browsers, as well as Android.
