OK so I tried the approach specified in the thread and I got this message

 Selection    Alternative
-----------------------------------------------
*         1    /usr/bin/gij-4.2
 +        2    /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number: 2
I tried both versions. With version 1 I get

Starting Installer ...
java.lang.NullPointerException
   at com.exe4j.runtime.LauncherEngine.launch(Unknown Source)
   at com.install4j.runtime.Launcher.main(Unknown Source)
java.lang.NullPointerException

With version 2 It will load OK but it will hang when putting in a second thought.

Any Ideas?

Andrew

You should use version 2 here.

Can you reinstall PB after having selected this Java version? Can you also post the output.log in the ~/PersonalBrain folder?

The file is OK - I can edit it fine in Vista. However the Kubuntu load is not working with this file or any other, including a new file made in Kubuntu.

What is the output of this run in a terminal:

java -version

Have you also run an:

apt-get upgrade

On your Kubuntu after the install?

TheBrain 8.0.2.2 Slackware 14.2 KDE 4.10.3 Java 1.8 / (Windows 7)
Quote

The output is

drew@Compaq:~$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode, sharing)

running apt-get is more difficult. I am new to the Linux world and it looks like things could be considerably better than windows but, I don't understand everything. Here is the output of the console

drew@Compaq:~$ apt-get upgrade
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Tried to login as as su but for some reason it would not take my password. I am the only user. Anyway that is the current state of the problem.

Thanks for your efforts

Andrew

Your root password is not the same as your user password, and was created when you installed kubuntu. If you don't recall it, you must either reinstall kubuntu, or head over to: http://ubuntuforums.org
They are very helpful there.

That apt-get command is very useful, it can be used to install all programs om kubuntu quickly, and maintenance and upgrades of the system. More on that on the ubuntu forums.

Can you also create a new brain in PB and check if the same problem occurs then?

I will work the password thing today. However yes the same issue is there when I make a new brain in k-ville. I just tried to create one and I could not enter in a new name. The dialog appeared but could not type in it. Acted like it did not have focus. However cursor is in box and flashing.  Here is the output log

Could you create a brain in your /home/drew folder instead if that is possible?

I noticed something about mozilla folder not being found and there is no indication that I tried to start a new brain.  Also the APPDATA variable seems to be lost in the ether.

Sorry, but can you explain what the issue is exactly?, I don't seem to understand.
Thanks,

Well the issue is that if I start up a brain - this particular one was started in Vista and try to add to the brain, the first thought works. Adding a second thought does not. Also I am not able to start a new brain in Kubuntu, while it works fine in Vista. Strange that Vista works and Linux does not. Anyway this thread shows lots of output from the program and... well you can read it.

Are you trying to access a Personal Brain database that was originally created in Vista? I think Linux wants a clean installation.

Try to install a fresh PB as another user in Ubuntu(create a new user, or as root) to check that.
