Hello All,

I have been working on a knowledge brain for my work that contains a lot of information. I would like to export in HTML (both simple and xml) to my co workers. The problem is that while I attach files to the brain and they get exported correctly I can not seem to figure out how to insert the picture in to the Notes portion of the view so that it exports correctly and shows up in the Notes view as an actual picture with text around it after export.

Anyone have any ideas?

I thought of putting it on the web server and that would work but most of the time when people view this it would not be connected to the Internet.

Thank you for all your help!

I'm not sure what you are seeing. I just ran a sitebrain export with some thoughts with pictures in the notes and it displayed the note information with the pictures correctly.

When you exported did you choose Do not open attachments automatically? Also, was include notes checked?

If neither of these help, would you mind posting a screenshot?

I think our friend simply can't find the "Insert Image" function in the Notes editor. @Yurug, images go into notes via Cut and Paste; they can be resized, and they will export to HTML successfully.

Thank you for your post.... try moving the exported folder to another computer.

The problem is when you do a cut and paste of a picture it actually links via the file:// settings and does not export that file with the folder (Unless I am wrong). So when you are browsing from a computer you created the brain from it looks just fine.

I just ran against this problem after I started moving the brain from one system to another (personal and work computer) via Brain.zip. Thats when I found out that the pictures did not transfer as Vista and XP have home directories in different locations.

Try moving the folder to a computer, or move or rename one of the pictures in your brain and let me know if the export still shows the picture.

My does not!

I'm not able to recreate that. I exported to a sitebrain, with an attachment on a thought, and then moved the folder to a network location (I moved the whole folder, not just the contents).
Did you move the supporting folders also when you moved the file?

Some things to look at:
When you are in PersonalBrain, change the note view to HTML and verify that the <img> tag is pointing to the location of your PB database, not a temp file.

If that's ok, go to the Details tab and note the Internal ID of that thought (in the example below it's 151).
Now export the sitebrain and verify Include Notes and Include file attachments are checked.

Now, navigate to the folder where the sitebrain is saved, and go into the thoughtData folder. First find the Folder named with the Internal ID of the thought and open it. There should be a subfolder called PersonalBrain Notes. In that subfolder should be your image.
Now, go back to the thoughtDatafolder, and look for the [Internal ID number].html file. If you look at that, the image path shouldn't reference the complete file path, but should look something like:
<img height="184" src="151/PersonalBrain Notes/image47758.jpg"

Hopefully this will help narrow down where the issue is.

I guess either I am confused about this or we are doing two different things.

Lets run through this and tell me where it differs:

1. Brain File Exists on root of D: Drive (example)
2. Open Note field.
3. Cut and paste an image file only (from browser select copy image and then paste it in to note). Image resides on root of E: drive.
4. Picture appears in the brain notes file, it is copied to the following location (changed a bit): file:///C:/My_Brains/Log_brain/Files/2BA65F7B-71AC-6A40-8E64-98548FB1F4FD/PersonalBrain Notes/downloadedimagefile5.jpg

5. Now you export the brain file see image 1

6. Opening the exported brain in browser and looking at the same image it is linked to:
file:///C:/My_Brains/Log_brain/Files/2BA65F7B-71AC-6A40-8E64-98548FB1F4FD/PersonalBrain%20Notes/downloadedimagefile5.jpg

So this is a local system link to a brain file while it is in notes the files got exported but never got re-linked. In fact I found the file located in a moved file at Temp\Log (Simple)\thoughtData\8\PersonalBrain Notes but there was no relinking to this exported file.

I am guessing but the reason you are seeing the file is that you are using on same computer so the brain directory does not change. Since I am using 2 computer the brain files are not in the same place and that is what caused me to find the problem.

So lets do specifics so that Harlan and staff can do a bug fix when someone else confirms.

Brain 5.0.2.8 --- I am going to trying with 5.0.2.9 later and see if it is the same. Click image for larger version - Name: Image1.jpg, Views: 364, Size: 26.90 KB

Ok so a little test that I have done on the "Beta" version. 5.0.2.9 now exports this correctly by using relative URL's instead of the full URL's.

Although I found another problem related to cutting and pasting of files/pics etc to Notes.

It looks like if the local drive is used instead of a URL (file: tag) then the picture is not actually copied in to notes and remains local to the system.

Unfortuantely there should be some distinction if you want to copy the file in to the brain or leave it where it is such as with file attachments.

Personal Brain 5.0/3.6
I had pasted pictures into thoughts as well as text in the notes space
When I view the exported brain there are NO icons but the text is viewable.
What did I do wrong???

Thought icons aren't exported. However, pictures in the notes should be. When you view the .html code in the export is there a reference to the picture? You can view the source code in IE by choosing View > Source.

Seems to be a CRITICAL (to me) issue. Just off the phone with Tech support.
They are aware that icons in thoughts are not exported. This is the whole reason I purchased the pro edition, to be able to publish brains to MY web site. I could not believe that I was told to use webbrain.  That makes NO/ZERO sense.

If I see the icons in a thought with personal brain, why can I not publish on MY website.  I am waiting for a call from marketing, but My only hope is that many of you reading this also complain.
It seems that what ever I "see" on personal brain should be exportable to my web site.
I would  love to know the feelings of other readers.

I have the same issue. Take a look at the html page in the thoughtData folder generated by TheBrain. The embedded image reference is the path of where the image was copied from. So running the WebBrain from the system you created will resolve the path. Moving the html to another machine will show the problem.
Regarding icons, I wrote some scripts to go and plug in the icons into the .xml files in thoughtData folder.

How can we map the icons to the HTML?

In the folder thoughtData there are .xml files that begin with a number associated with a though ID (not sure if this is the right term).
In the xml file, is an entry for the though which includes icon="". I just fill in the "" with a path to the icon relative to the root directory of the html files. So for example, I created a a folder "icons" and copy them there and then in the .xml files is icon="icons/happyface.jpg".
Note: if the .xml file get updated by TheBrain html export, it will overwrite this.

This happens because when you copy and paste an image into Notes, by default the image is copied into your temp folder. If you activate another Thought the image will be copied into your corresponding Thoughts "PersonalBrain Notes" folder which will be carried over with the export.

Thanks,
Moe
