SimpleMind  at http://www.simpleapps.eu/simplemind/desktop has created an elegant cross-platform Mindmapping application that migrates seamlessly across PC/Mac/iPad/Android. It lacks the sophistication of TheBrain, but illustrates the potential of a fine program to work on most devices at a modest cost. Can TheBrain achieve a similar adaptation without relying on a pricey WebBrain subscription?

That is a completely different level of app. Also, pls. note: "Opening Mind Maps from SimpleMind Free (desktop Mac) on SimpleMind Touch is not supported." so also the "cross-platform seamlessness" is limited...

Also this SimpleMind is strictly hyerarchical (hence, to my eyes, undeserving of the "Mind" part of its name).
Even in Freemind you can link any-to-any concepts. I've just played around with SimpleMind and, apart from its truly ergonomic interface, that's about it.
Heck, VUE's got an even easier interface, and you can do real mindmapping
