This is an interaction existing in the MindMap software Freeplane and is really nice. 

I find myself frequently wanting to collapse/expand quickly a given branch of thoughts. Clicking in the -/+ signs works but it's slower and takes more effort, just because I have to aim to a small button. 

On a different but related note, having to aim to small spaces requires precision, so it creates tension in our muscles, mainly in our wrist and shoulder, which translates to tiredness and pain later.
This is already possible when using the keyboard navigation arrows (use the arrow keys to highlight a thought and press the spacebar). It doesn't work in combination with the mouse, but that would be nice indeed.
