I almost always title my thought notes with the thought name.

I would like to see a feature that allows notes to automatically set the notes title/heading as the thought name.

Matt

I often do this also, but usually in specific cases. +1, even if it's a keyboard shortcut to set the Thought name to the Note Title.

+1 - Nice feature, but please keep it optional

To build on this, having templated notes.

For example, when performing research, I always ask/answer the same questions. Having these questions titled in a template would be awesome.

[WHAT IS IT, AND HOW DOES IT WORK] (Title)

[Text]

[WHY IS IT NEEDED} (Title)

[Text]

etc.

Definitely +1 for reasonablekamikaze's suggested feature request for creating customized note templates. I would use this feature on almost a daily basis.

However, for each of these note template features to be truly helpful in my use case, they would ultimately depend upon:
> resolving several outstanding note bugs and
> providing several custom note formatting features that were requested by multiple brain users quite a long while ago (many pending since late 2016)....

For more details, please see my list of these note bugs and feature requests, along with a related poll:

I create a thought and call it “Template, [name].
Then when I need I activate the thought and duplicate it (I have the duplicate thought command assigned to ctrl/cmd + d). Then shift drag to where it needs to go.

Takes a a few seconds and works well.

@zenrain ~

I'm currently using this strategy, as well -- and it certainly gets the job done.

However, it would be even faster and more convenient to eliminate all the plex navigation and instantly (simply) select and insert an existing note template from a note menu (pull down, right click, etc.)

The notes section not receiving any love recently. ðŸ˜§

Still buggy, and missing features like table creation. ðŸ˜¢

+1. Very important feature: An option for Selected Text As Thought Name.

FWIIW, my thoughts on templated notes.

TheBrain is really good at being TheBrain. Templating is sort of outside TheBrain. We start with a template, then variable insertion, then scripting to do more complicated templates.... And "soon" TheBrain tries to be good at being TheBrain but also has to be a good templating engine, etc.

I think dedicated software always does the job better than everything-and-the-kitchensink software.

I have templating system wide on my computer because I use automation software called AutoHotkey. It can do simple text replacements but also very complicated scripting; it can map one key to another key; you can almost write complete software with it.

The software enables me, through simple scripting, to do things like create a keyboard shortcut where none exists, execute several actions at the touch of a key or after typing a phrase. I have simple templates and templates in txt files. When I type date{space}{space} I get 2019-05-28. When I hit my caps lock button the program that has focus closes 🙂

Similar software exists for Mac: Keyword Maestro, TextExpander (which also works on Windows)

Other alternatives, both free and paid, both for Windows and Mac, some more user friendly than the other, are listed here https://alternativeto.net/software/autohotkey/

The win? No need to wait for your wishes to become true, and now you have the power to customize things everywhere, not just in TheBrain 🙂

I totally agree with @ruudhein in theory, but TheBrain would need a quite a few minor features to allow effective Keyboard Maestro scripting on a Mac. For example, as far as I can tell, there's no reliable way to format a note's current paragraph as a title with Keyboard Maestro, because "Format Current Paragraph as a Title" is not available as a menu item, and it requires clicking on a widget that is not always displayed, and when it is displayed, it's not at a fixed position relative to any stable point in TheBrain's window. So changing paragraph formatting is not scriptable at the moment. Other problems like this abound, and would need to be fixed before Keyboard Maestro scripting would be possible for many items like this. (Just copying the title of the current thought to the clip board is quite difficult.) I suspect the same is true of AutoHotKey, but I don't use Windows so I can't verify this.

EDIT: As @Harlan points out further in the thread, paragraph formatting is scriptable if you set a keyboard shortcut via Preferences -> Keyboard -> Notes.

True, I guess; I don't use "format current paragraph as a title", wouldn't even know where to find it.

With the thought selected, CTRL ENTER opens the properties, with the title having the focus. So off the top of my head I would have something like this in autohotkey:

SendInput {CTRLDOWN}{ENTER}{CTRLUP}
SendInput {CTRLDOWN}a{CTRLUP} ; CTRL A = Select All in Windows
SendInput {CTRLDOWN}c{CTRLUP} ; CTRL C = copy in WIndows
SendInput {ESC} ; escape out of the thought properties Window

Now I have the title on my clipboard.

My advantage is that I can do a lot of things this way for which otherwise I would have to wait, maybe in vain even.

Example: when I press F8 on my system, it opens TheBrain, and puts the focus in the search box. As I query my brain many times every day, having access from anywhere is simple and clean. Otherwise? Otherwise I would have had to wait until such a system wide setting is available within TheBrain itself.

With all these programs, like AutoHotkey and Keyboard Maestro, there is a bit of a learning curve, but the investment works everywhere. Every time you find yourself doing something repeatedly, that's a chance to automate it with such a program. If you can get to it, or do it, using keyboard shortcuts and/or by mouse clicking, you can automate it with these programs.

Nice — yes something similar would work for Keyboard Maestro.

And like I said, I totally agree with you — Keyboard Maestro and AutoHotKey are essential tools that everyone should use, and they fulfill a lot of feature requests. My point is more that it would be great for TheBrain devs to add some relatively simple features such as menu items for note formatting, since this makes these programs much more effective at augmenting TheBrain's basic abilities.
